FedEx pilot pay ranges from $100,237 to $319,190 for first officers and from $289,811 to $450,240 for captains across narrowbody and widebody fleets (estimated annual earnings based on projected yearly credit hours, from an 884-hour minimum guarantee in Year 1 to a 960-hour lineholder average in Year 15).
FedEx pilots, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), work under a collective bargaining agreement ratified in 2026. It delivered an immediate 39.76% pay rate increase, then 3% raises 18, 30, and 42 months after the Date of Signing (DOS).
The agreement improved compensation, retirement, scheduling, work rules, and job protections. Among other areas, it increased per diem, enhanced duty rigs, and introduced a market-based cash balance retirement plan for new hires.

FedEx pilots went more than five years without a raise. The 2026 contract brought an hourly rate increase in July 2026, with more raises in January 2028, 2029, and 2030.
The pay scale splits into narrowbody and widebody scales. The narrowbody pay scale covers the 757, while the widebody scale covers the 777F, 767F, MD-11, and A300.
Each scale has 15 longevity years for captains and first officers. From Year 2, widebody pay averages about $41 per hour more for first officers and $64 more per hour for captains.

FedEx Pilot Salary Calculator
Pay Breakdown
In addition to the hourly rate, guarantees, rigs, and premium pay determine what a FedEx pilot takes home.
Trip Guarantee
A pilot’s trip guarantee is the minimum pay a trip carries, counted in credit hours (CH). It equals the trip’s scheduled value when the trip is awarded or assigned (bid award, trip trade, or open time assignment) or when the pilot blocks out, whichever is greater.
That value is the higher of two calculations:
- Trip Rig + Excess Block: The trip rig plus any revenue block hours above 10 in any duty period.
- Sum of Duty Periods: The sum of the CH values of the duty periods, each computed as the highest of its block hours, duty rig, or minimum pay per duty period (MPDP).
Overage Pay
Overage pay covers credit hours earned beyond a trip’s scheduled value. It also applies when a trip runs past its scheduled return. If a trip runs 2 hours or less into scheduled time off at base, overage pays at the normal rate. If it runs more than 2 hours into time off, the first 12 CH of overage pay 150%, while anything above 12 CH pays 200%.
Minimums & Rigs
- Minimum Bid Period Guarantee: 68 CH in a 4-week bid period, 85 CH in a 5-week period, and 102 CH in a 6-week period
- Reserve Line Guarantee (RLG): about 96% of the average regular line, never below the minimum guarantee
- Minimum Days Off: 13 days in a 4-week bid period, 16 in a 5-week period, and 19 in a 6-week period for both line holders and reserves, since lines cap work days at 15, 19, and 23
- Minimum Pay Per Duty Period (MPDP): 3:12 CH for a duty period in a trip with a layover, 6:24 CH for a base out-and-back flown in one duty period, and 6:24 CH or 9:36 CH for duty periods through a designated sort hub
- Duty Rigs: domestic day duty periods (showtime 0500 to 1559 local base time) earn 1 CH per 2.0 duty hours, domestic night (1600 to 0059), critical (0100 to 0459) earn 1 CH per 1.5 hours, and international duty periods earn 1 CH per 1.73 hours.
- Trip Rig: 1 CH for every 3.75 hours of time away from base
Premium Pay
- Volunteer (VLT) & Draft (DRF): 150% of the normal rate for extra open trips, flown by volunteering or by accepting a company draft offer
- Reserve Above Guarantee: 150% for credit hours earned on R-days above the RLG
- International Override: $10.00 per credit hour for captains and $8.00 for first officers on any trip with a segment that starts, ends, or stops outside the contiguous 48 states
- Ultra Long Range (ULR) Premium: $24.00 per credit hour for captains and $17.00 for first officers, on top of the international override, for trips with a segment scheduled over 16 block hours
- Disruption Pay: changes to a trip after it is awarded, such as an extra landing or a layover change, pay 1:00 to 3:00 CH per event
Deadhead & Per Diem
- Deadhead: pay and credit under the trip guarantee for air deadheads to or from revenue flights
- Per Diem: $2.85 per hour domestically and $3.85 internationally, increasing to $3.00 and $4.05 about 24 months after the contract’s effective date
Training Pay
New hires in active pay status earn 2.25 CH per calendar day from the date of hire until their first activation date. They have no minimum guarantee until activation, and it is prorated afterward.
The 2.25 CH daily rate works out to 63 CH in a 4-week bid period and 78.75 CH in a 5-week period. Both are below the 68 CH and 85 CH guarantees, so first-year earnings can run lower until activation.
Recurrent training on a scheduled day off pays 4:30 CH per day on top of the bid line guarantee.
FedEx reportedly doesn’t provide hotel accommodation or transportation during initial training.
Benefits
FedEx pilots get real freedom over where they live. Many commute to base by riding a jumpseat (the extra cockpit seat) on FedEx or other airlines’ flights.
Senior pilots can bid schedules with long blocks of days off at home. Moving to international flying brings long-haul trips to Asia and Europe, with layovers that leave time to explore a new city.
The 2026 contract adds real-time trip trading, which FedEx must implement by the August 2027 bid period. It also adds a no-furlough provision. FedEx cannot involuntarily furlough pilots while it wet leases aircraft (hires aircraft with crew).
That said, domestic flying is built around the overnight hub sort, which many pilots find hard on sleep. Captain upgrade has no set timeline and depends on seniority, retirements, and fleet growth.
Healthcare
FedEx offers medical, dental, and vision coverage, with Anthem administering the medical plans. Dental and vision are separate elections. Pilots choose from three medical plans:
- Buy Up (PPO): highest premium, but no deductible and the lowest out-of-pocket maximum for a single pilot
- CDHP Purple: lower premium, but a deductible and a lower out-of-pocket maximum than Orange
- CDHP Orange: lowest premium, but the same deductible as Purple and a higher out-of-pocket maximum
Buy Up’s lower out-of-pocket maximum applies to single coverage. On family coverage, it has the highest maximum of the three plans.
Pilots on either CDHP choose between a Health Savings Account (HSA) and a Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA). FedEx deposits money into the account to help cover the deductible. Purple gets a larger deposit than Orange. The amount is the same for an HSA or an HRA.
The HSA pairs only with a Limited Purpose Flexible Spending Account (FSA), which covers dental and vision only. Buy Up and the HRA pair with a healthcare FSA.
Retirement Plan
FedEx changed the retirement plan for pilots hired on or after June 29, 2026. A 401(k) and a cash balance plan replace the legacy pension. The Pilots’ Retirement Savings Plan (PRSP) is the FedEx 401(k). The company contributes 9% of pay and matches 50% of the first $1,000 a pilot contributes each year.
The Market Based Cash Balance Plan (MBCBP) starts January 1, 2028. It credits 9% of pay, rising to 10% in 2029, plus market-based interest. It is a pension-style plan that shows your benefit as an account balance. It vests after three years of service.
From 2028, the company puts in 18% of pay, rising to 19% in 2029. New hires who start before January 1, 2028 get an opening MBCBP balance equal to the credits they would have earned since their hire date. Also from 2028, the company pays 401(k) contributions above IRS limits as taxable cash.
Profit Sharing
FedEx Express currently doesn’t offer profit sharing to pilots.
Life & Disability Insurance
- Life & AD&D Insurance: Company-paid $800,000 life insurance and $15,000 AD&D
- Long-Term Disability (LTD): 60% of basic monthly earnings (up to $18,000/month) for the first 24 months, and 50% of basic monthly earnings (up to $15,000/month) thereafter until FAA mandatory retirement age
Voluntary Insurance
- Optional Life Insurance: up to $2,000,000 for the pilot and $500,000 for a spouse
- Optional AD&D Insurance: from $35,000 up to $235,000
- Short-Term Disability
- Accident Insurance
- Critical Illness Insurance
Vacation Time
FedEx pilots receive up to 36 days of paid vacation a year, at 6 credit hours (CH) per day. New hires accrue 1.5 days per month for up to 10 months in active pay status.
| Years of Service | Annual Vacation |
|---|---|
| 1-4 | 15 days (90 CH) |
| 5-9 | 22 days (132 CH) |
| 10-19 | 29 days (174 CH) |
| 20+ | 36 days (216 CH) |
Sick Leave
FedEx pilots receive 72 credit hours (CH) in their regular sick account on the first day of the first bid period each year, if they are in active pay status.
Pilots who start paid status later, including new hires, receive 6 CH for each bid period left in that year. At year end, unused hours move into the disability sick account, which holds a maximum of 686 CH.
Parental Leave
FedEx Express pilots can use vacation, sick leave, unpaid maternity leave, or, if eligible, long-term disability during a maternity period. That period runs from the date of pregnancy through 120 days after the pregnancy ends.
Sick leave is automatically available from the 21st week of pregnancy through 30 days after it ends, with medical certification. Unpaid maternity leave runs concurrently with the federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) when permitted by law.
Fathers, adoptive parents, and foster parents can use vacation or request unpaid personal leave, according to ALPA’s FedEx guidance. They may also be eligible for FMLA leave.
Travel & Shipping Perks
- Unlimited, free space-available jumpseat travel on FedEx freighters for pilots
- ZED fares on partner passenger airlines for pilots and eligible dependents
- 75% discount on personal FedEx shipping for pilot, spouse, and dependents
Pilot Bases

As of October 2026, FedEx Express has 3 pilot bases across the U.S.:
- MEM: Memphis, Tennessee
- IND: Indianapolis, Indiana
- OAK: Oakland, California
Fleet
FedEx Express launched operations with only 14 Dassault Falcon 20 jets, and has since grown into the world’s largest cargo airline by fleet size.
As of October 2026, FedEx Express’s trunk fleet totals 383 jet aircraft, with 10 on order.
| Aircraft Type | In Service | On Order |
|---|---|---|
| Boeing 777F | 59 | 10 (2 used) |
| Boeing 767F | 152 | — |
| McDonnell Douglas MD-11 | 29 | — |
| Airbus A300-600 | 57 | — |
| Boeing 757-200 | 86 | — |
| Total | 383 | 10 |
FedEx Express also owns more than 300 Cessna and ATR turboprops, but contract carriers fly this feeder fleet.
Final Thoughts
FedEx pilots went more than five years without a raise, which culminated in resignations reaching historic levels according to ALPA.
The 2026 contract changed that. It brought a 39.76% raise, a new cash balance retirement plan, and real-time trip trading.
The trade-offs remain. Domestic flying still revolves around the overnight sort, and new hires no longer get a pension. But for the first time in years, the pay matches the job.
But for pilots weighing FedEx, the new pay scale and retirement plan make it a stronger offer than a year ago.”
